Questions for final

 So, here we are at the end of the semester. I hope everyone enjoyed the class (especially under these very trying circumstances). We have gone over many of the most important aspects of public policy and how it impacts our lives. 

The questions for the final are below. The exam will not be until 5/25 so you will have two weeks to prepare a response. I said this during the midterm but I must emphasize that the responses should be in your own original words, not copied from websites or other sources (see the syllabus section on plagiarism). A typical response is about 1-3 paragraphs long.

1. What does the statement "a budget is a moral document" mean? How does this apply to the U.S. federal budget?

2. How does the U.S. rank compared to other industrialized countries in terms of healthcare?

3. How has Social Security expanded since the program was first created and how does this lead to problems with funding?

4. Should test scores be the most important indicator for education, why or why not? How does the U.S. rank in terms of test scores?

All the weekly reflection papers should now be completed. If they were completed on time, and they are each about a page long, you will receive full credit for this part of your grade.

The environmental movement is relatively recent. Knowledge of climate change, or recognizing the existence of climate change, is as much a political choice as it is about "knowing the facts," which of course 99 per cent of scientists regard climate change as a man-made phenomenon. Globalization definitely has a big impact on climate change and global warming. Since economic growth has always been a cause of urbanization, as people leave the rural country and migrate to cities looking for work, globalization has brought with it a tremendous growth of urbanization worldwide, especially in countries like China, India, Brazil, South Korea, Russia, and many other cities worldwide. The debate between Noam Chomsky and Michel Foucault in 1971 represents a debate that has occurred in politics since ancient times over the importance of concepts like truth and justice. Thinkers like Foucault argue that truth and justice are merely masks to conceal the motives of power. Groups or individuals who claim to represent these ideas use them to hold sway over others, and to make their power over others seem normal or natural. Foucault goes on to argue that political movements should get rid of any notions of truth or justice, and simply be explicit about seeking to gain power. In Plato's Republic , Thrasymachus makes a similar argument, when he says "justice is nothing but the advantage of the stronger."
